If you’re like me, then you get headaches pretty frequently. Understandably, I’m not always comfortable with the amount of Motrin I find myself taking. All I can think about is how much it’s probably ripping up my stomach. So I was pretty intrigued when one day a fellow Hot Sauce Library staffer hoping to cure a headache ate a whole spoonful of Mad Dog Inferno Reserve Hot Sauce (super hot – you have to sign an Extreme Heat Waiver to purchase). Apparently, the capsaicin in hot sauce and hot peppers may help to relieve headaches. Who knew?
Reviews are mixed on whether or not capsaicin actually helps. Most studies say that it does help, especially with cluster headaches, but that it needs to be applied topically (usually in the nasal cavities) to really have an effect. Other people online say that they found relief just by eating certain hot peppers with a high capsaicin concentration, such as cayenne peppers.
Have you ever tried eating hot sauce or hot peppers to cure a headache or migraine? Did it work? I’d love to hear about your experiences!
